Portable water purifiers aren’t just for survivalists!

If you’re not a hard-core survivalist with a fully equipped, off-grid bunker, you might not think that a water purifier is for you. After all, every time you turn on the tap, you get all the water you could possibly need.
However, water is a funny thing. Next to air, it’s the most important element of survival but it’s easily tainted by bacteria, chemicals, and other contaminants, and the worst part is — you don’t realize they’re there until it’s too late!
So, who might need a water purifier, especially one that’s portable?

1.  Babies!

If your infant is drinking formula, you want to use the purist water possible, no matter where you are. Additionally, fluoridated water can cause white spots on those beautiful baby teeth. Some water purifiers reduce the amount of fluoride, but not all. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s website or product insert. (The PurifiCup does reduce fluoride in water.)

2.  Backpackers

A lightweight, portable purifier insures pure, healthy water no matter how far off the path you wander! Even the clearest looking lake water can contain nasty bacteria. Better safe than sorry.

3.  Road trippers

Not all water everywhere is equally pure. To be on the safe side, a portable water filter stored in the glove compartment will help keep you and your family hydrated without worrying about local water conditions.

4.  World travelers

No one wants to ever find themselves in a faraway location desperately seeking a toilet! A small water purifier, tucked away in suitcase or day bag will make sure you have good memories of every trip!

5.  Cruisers

Does the Carnival cruise ship, the Triumph, ring a bell? A small portable water filter would have helped those unhappy cruisers who were worried about the safety of their drinking water.

purificup 26.  The Paranoid Mom/Dad

If you’ve given serious thought to wrapping your child in heavy duty bubble wrap before they go out to play, you just might want to also consider having a portable water purifier on hand! After all, when your kid works up a really good sweat, they’re going to want something to drink, so it might as well be the healthiest water possible.

7.  The fitness nut

Anyone who spends hours at the gym and studies the contents of every food label before putting it into their mouth, should do the same with their drinking water. Find out from your municipal water source exactly what’s in the water that comes out of your faucet and you just might decide you need a water filter.

8.  The water connoisseur

The popularity of home reverse osmosis systems and bottled water have made people realize that water doesn’t all taste the same! If you’re picky about how your water tastes and maybe you even have a favorite brand or two of the bottled stuff, you may want to start using a water purifier for something that tastes the way water was meant to taste!

9.  The conspiracy buff

Ahhh, there’s nothing like a good conspiracy to get the blood pumping and adrenaline flowing! If you’re likely to park your car outside the municipal water plant with a pair of binoculars focused on the plant’s perimeter, looking for terrorists or other ne’er do wells, you might want to also have a portable water purifier with you. Just in case.

10.  The Survival Mom

If you’ve made the decision and commitment to keep your family safe and healthy, then having a small water purifier on hand makes a lot of sense.

LA Times: Silver found to increase effectiveness of antibiotics

Silver found to increase effectiveness of antibiotics

Silver, used for centuries to fight infection and other germs, when added to antibiotics in trace amounts makes the drugs as much as 1,000 times more effective in treating mice, researchers find.

Thousands of years before the discovery of microbes or the invention of antibiotics, silver was used to protect wounds from infection and to preserve food and water.

FEMA’s Top 12 Emergency Items Analyzed by The Survival Mom

The FEMA website lists basic items that should be in every emergency kit. This is helpful information, and as I was reading the list yesterday, I added a few thoughts and tips of my own. FEMA’s list items are italicized.

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation

This is the bare minimum, especially if you live in a climate that is hot and humid. You’d be surprised at how quickly a gallon disappears! Washing face, sanitation, some laundry, drinking, food preparation…water goes fast. Since water is, basically, “free”, don’t scrimp on your water storage. Re-filled 2-liter soda bottles stored under beds, on the floors of closets, behind the couch, will all add up.

Have at least a couple of different ways to purify water. Bleach has a limited shelf life but since it’s so inexpensive and readily available, do keep at least one bottle on hand at all times. Write the purchase date on the bottle, and every six months or so, buy a new one and use the bleach in the older bottle.

It’s also smart to have a larger system that can purify larger amounts of water quickly and smaller portable purifiers for emergency kits, bug out bags, and outdoor activities, such as camping, hunting, and hiking. Some of the brands I’ve used and own are PurifiCup........See the full list at The Survival Mom.com

The Flu Fighters - by Dr. Marie J. Miczak

Flu Season Line of Defense: Hand Sanitizer & Mushroom Therapy
I'm not talking about the band, The Foo Fighters!  Flu season is here and is already wrecking havoc in the lower southern states in the US.  Worldwide, the flu (short for influenza) costs billions of dollars a year in lost wages and sick days. While most may not end up in the hospital, elderly people and those with compromised immune systems are at risk of serious complications and even death.

I think one of the best plans is a preventative one.  Here are some cutting edge ideas to keep you healthy this flu season:

Vitamin C: This important vitamin works by strengthening your cellular walls.  If you are prone to bruising or your gums bleed easily, you probably could use some extra vitamin C. You can take between 500 to 1,000 mgs a day in divided doses.  You can only absorb about 500 mgs at a time so you might want to skip taking any more than that at one sitting. You might also want to try a buffered vitamin C like Ester-C.  Unlike straight ascorbic acid, the buffered version won't over-acidify your tissues and urine.

Mushroom Supplements: Organic mushroom supplements are really hot right now as this common fungi are known to strengthen the immune system, fight infections and cancer cells. The one I recommend is made with several organic mushrooms and ginger. Rainbow Light Certified Organics Mushroom Therapy has: Trametes - Shitake - Maitake - Reishi - Cordyceps. 1 capsule per day is all you need but I also enjoy lots of marinated mushrooms on my salad!

Hand Sanitizers: I keep one of these in each handbag in case I want to stop and eat something while I'm out. Sort of like washing your hands on the fly. They come in all sorts of scents but choose one like that kills 99.9% of germs.  The Essence of Beauty Citrus Coconut Antibacterial Hand Sanitizer pictured above has little moisture beads.  The Bath & Body Works PocketBac Anti-bacterial Hand Gel is called Lunch Box and smells like a Honey Pretzel. I guess it would be perfect for a lunch box.  Hand sanitizers not only work on your hands but on other suspect surfaces such as handles and water fountains.
If you are traveling, you can sanitize water from public fountains with a PurifiCup®. It kills 99.9% of bacteria in your water.

Flu Shots: A seasonal flu shot can be obtained at your doctor's office or at a local drug store chain like CVS, Walgreens, etc. and will run between $28 - $30. You don't need an appointment at the drug stores but each year the flu shot is made up of 3 of the most common flu strains expected to hit the population.  This means that you have only a 30% less chance of getting the flu bug that's hovering around your area. If you do decide to get a flu shot, ask around about the new trans-dermal needle that only penetrates the upper layers of the skin. It is less painful and will not leave your arm aching like the inter-muscular shots.

Water & Air Sanitizers: If you have a daily multivitamin protocol, definitely keep up with it during the flu season. If I'm traveling, I take along a small Ozium Spray Air Sanitizer and a PurifiCup Portable Water Filtration System. You never know when you might need to use a public water fountain and using a water filter that kills 99.9% of water-borne bacteria gives me peace of mind as well as pure water.

Natural Disaster Survival Tips - by Doctor Marie J. Miczak

Living in the path of Hurricane Sandy (and last year, Irene), has been a serious wake-up call.  While the main foci of my blog is cross training and fitness, this recent natural disaster has given me quite a few relative talking points.

Rely on Your Own Power

Strengthen Your Immune System

Be Prepared: Food,  Water Warm Clothing

You don't need to purchase bottled water.  You can fill any bottle with filtered water and it will keep for several weeks.  Another option is to invest in a water BOB for your bathtub. You can fill it up and dispense as needed.  Just make sure to have 2 gallons per person per day for drinking and washing needs.  If you are not sure about your water supply's safety, consider boiling your water for 5 minutes or invest in a PurifiCup Portable Water Filtration System.
If you have to relocate to a shelter or a holding center, you can bring your Purificup with you. Having safe, pure water to drink during an emergency is a very important step towards staying healthy.  Likewise hypothermia is more apt to be a problem if you are dehydrated.

Warm Clothing

Right now I'm keeping an eye on the next storm.  When the barometer starts falling, that's when you know trouble is brewing in the atmosphere. My prayers and heart go out to all of my NY/NJ neighbors who are still struggling with power outages, fallen debris and all manner of deprivation.  Some have lost their homes, over 100 people have lost their lives due to this storm.  Be safe all and God bless.

PurifiCup® Now in India

PurifiCup is deeply committed to the idea that everyone should have access to clean drinking water, not only in North America but globally too.  Many companies and organizations do great work to bring clean, reliable water sources to people around the world who do not have access to clean drinking water.  PurifiCup applauds these efforts by others.  In an effort to do our part globally,
we are excited to announce that our product is being made available to the people of India.

Our partnership with the PRACSOL Health Group is an integral part in making PurifiCup filtration systems available to the people of India.  With their help, we are able to offer our state of the art, easy to use, compact and convenient water filtration systems to a large population of people, many of whom may not have the easiest access to clean drinking water.

India's economy is booming but most of its population has little to no access to clean water.  Dirt, bacteria and chemicals are just a few of the things that are lurking in India's unclean water. As people continue to drink this unclean water they get sick and pass illness to family members and friends.  Imagine how much safer the water would be after it filters through a PurifiCup water filtration system's Exclusive nano-silver Membrane filter!  99.99% of all the bacteria would be gone and that means less people getting sick and passing illness to one another.

We are excited to be able to offer this affordable technology to a whole population of people who are desperately in need of safer and cleaner drinking water.  To read more about how PurifiCup filtration systems work, please click HERE.

Hey Buddy, Wanna Buy Some Tap Water?

From CNBC NEWS Blog:

One of the most brilliant business plans ever: Selling New York City tap water.

I know! You wish you’d thought of it, am I right?!

What’s more, they want you to bring your own container! Hello, how low-overhead is that?

The company — the Molecule Project — actually takes New York City tap water, which New Yorkers will argue to death is already some of the best water around (save for the 100 year-old pipes that deliver it) and run it through a $20,000 pharmaceutical-grade filter. It’s an eight-step filtering process that is more thorough at removing contaminants than a Residential filter (Ruhf is insulted at the very comparison) and even better than home filtration systems to make water “soft.” My dad used to brag to anyone who dared enter our house about our “reverse osmosis” system from Culligan that got it down to 6 ppm — parts per million.

Ruhf wouldn’t specify how many ppm their filtered tap water is other than to say, “Our PPM is better than your dad’s. It’s by far less than 6 ppm.”

Their intentions are a little more noble than “Hey, buddy, wanna buy some tap water?”
“We have an increasing level of contamination nationally and internationally and it grew out of concern for what I was drinking,” Ruhf said, adding that they were inspired by the water stores in California and wanted to bring a variation on that idea to New York.

Best Picks Magazine - Dr. Marie J. Miczak

Planning Your Cabin Vacation:

Pure Water

One of the challenges every traveler faces is whether or not to drink the local water.  You'd be surprised at what passes for potability but suffice it to say, it's not going to taste like what you drink at home.  Many parks and resorts use well water, so the quality will vary from place to place.  We bypassed that by simply bringing a PurifiCup® portable water filtration system and had all the pure water we wanted for drinking and cooking.  It really worked fantastically and made both our water-bottles and meals taste so much better.

PurifiCup Usage Recommendations

One tip we like to share, when using PurfiCup from the Natural water sources to avoid any chances of contamination. Please see attached 2 images with notations, when using the Cup in between your trips, it should be pack this way to avoid untreated water to contaminate your “Sealed drinking Cup” . (see pictures) and below:

1. Design: Please see 2 Images, the smaller cup which collects the Filtered Clean water with a Seal cap to be carried. By design, the filter Housing does Not screw on the Drinking Cup; As you can see by-design the filter housing only screws into the Larger cup (the one you use to Scoop un-treated dirty water). Our engineers had already thought of such issue that’s why the design does not allow you to Screw the Filter housing to the Drinking Cup. PurifiCup is designed for user to obtain drinking water and Store water as you would as a Bottle.
2. Recommendations: For the users that may want to pack the PurifiCup back into single unit right after each use. Our suggestion is to Shake off the excess water, or rinse off the tip of the housing with clean water. Furthermore, if users are still worry about drops of water been in the cup, We recommend to Run the water thru again to be sure every drop is purified thru the Silver Membrane.
